Smart Money We offer free-to-the-public Smart Money courses each month at our downtown Logan offices on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM. These classes are for parents and their teens. We sponsor hundreds of hours of free-to-the-public financial literacy programs. A series of retirement preparation courses was co-sponsored by USUCCU and USU Extension and can be viewed online at: http://extension.usu.edu/retirement/htm/presentations. Common Ground Outdoor Adventures helps 1,500 community members with disabilities explore and find their true potential through adventures and outdoor recreation. Programs facilitate self-discovery, self-growth, and increased independence while encouraging outdoor ethics and promoting discovery of the natural world. Common Ground recognized USU Charter Credit Union as “Corporation of the Year” in October of 2008. USUCCU has sponsored the annual fund-raising golf tournament for the last several years. Utah State University recently recognized the USU Charter Credit Union for its extraordinary support of the Connections program for first-year students. USU Connections program helps orient and assimilate new USU students to the campus, community and resources. Connections organizers held a convocations for students and community with Ishmael Beah, a boy soldier from Sierra Leone and author of the memoir, A Long Way Gone. USUCCU’s grant helped pay for travel expenses of Mr. Beah as well as lunch for 1,600 new students and other administrative costs of the program. USU Charter Credit Union is proud to participate in a program through the Cache Education Foundation that rewards area teachers who are recognized for their dedication, perseverance, and talent. Each teacher receives a $500 cash award and our sincere appreciation! Partnering with Laser Precision, USUCCU helps raise funds for local schools by facilitating the collection of used toner or ink printer cartridges, cell phones, laptops, Palm Pilots, and mp3 players for recycling or remanufacturing in exchange for cash donations that schools may use at their discretion. Funds fill critical student needs such as books and valuable learning activities, such as educational field trips. Laser Precision owner and president Vern Fielding says, “Cash for Kids offers an alternative that is simple, easy, and also reduces the amount of toxins that are entering our landfills. The program is truly a win-win for everyone involved.” Former principal of Sunrise Elementary school Nancy Bartlet adds, “Teachers have been able to purchase much-needed reading, math, and science classroom materials that directly benefit children.” Donors are invited to drop off items at credit-union offices or area schools. Each year, USUCCU contributes prizes to the Reflections national PTA cultural arts program, which encourages students K-12 to express themselves through the creative arts. We also exhibit winners in our facilities, allowing some students to take pride in their first gallery experience. Click here to view a sampling of reflections art from Sunrise Elementary School. In conjunction with USU Extension and local schools like Logan High, we are working to help Spanish speaking immigrants learn critical skills in technology, language, and finance. We offer special presentations on account management, consumer loans, and economic issues affecting the Latino community today, as well as scholarships for an online learning technologies for adult and youth students. USUCCU provided matching funds for Cache Valley students and their teacher, Ron Hellstern, to travel to Washington D.C. to receive the President’s Environmental Youth Award for 2004-2005. We also co-sponsored the 9th grade science team from South Cache when they were invited to compete nationally at the National Environthon in Capital Reef National Park. Our friends at USU Brigham City Campus had a vision for their child care center. They came to USU Charter Credit Union and other local businesses to make that vision a reality. |
